Why Nutrition Matters
As we age, nutrition needs change. Appetite often decreases, chewing or swallowing can become difficult, and chronic health conditions may interfere with eating well. Key nutrient requirements also shift — for example, calcium becomes more important for bone health.
🍽️ Up to 72% of aged care residents are malnourished or at risk (Dietitians Australia).
🏥 1 in 2 older Australians live with at least one chronic condition, such as diabetes, arthritis, or heart disease.
🧠 Nutrition plays a key role in brain health — balanced diets are linked to better memory, mood, and dementia care.
🦴 Around 1 in 4 women and 1 in 17 men over 65 will experience a hip fracture (AIHW) — good nutrition, including calcium and vitamin D, helps reduce this risk.
Without the right support, these challenges can increase the risk of:
- Frailty and loss of independence
- Falls and hospitalisations
- Complications from chronic diseases
- Declining memory and mood
